'Water Flow ™' Engineering Spreadsheet Module

'Water Flow' MS Excel spreadsheet engineering module will assist you in the design of water or glycol heating and cooling piping systems.

Typical design process includes three steps:

  • calculation of the thermal loads for each section of the water loops of the system
  • calculation of the water or glycol flow rates for each pipe section based on a selected water temperature difference in the main supply and return pipes
  • using of a standard pipe chart to size the pipe sections based on the recommended water velocities and friction pressure loss rates and manual input of the found data into an Excel spreadsheet or directly pipe layout drawing
  • summing up of the evaluated pressure losses of the sections constituting the most remote branch to calculate the total piping system pressure loss required to size the system pump.

Thermal Loads Calculations

The thermal loads are prone for repeatedly changes caused by the space layout or other changes common in the design process. All the steps are repeated several times. The work requires significant time and close attention for manual error control.

The module automatically replicates the steps.

The engineers who are familiar with these calculations know how difficult it is to calculate without error in the reverse piping systems. Almost certainly the work has to be performed in multiple passes. With 'Water Flow' Module, you follow a few simple steps:

  • list in any order all the terminal heating or cooling units the system serves and the associated heating or cooling loads simulated by a software tool, or linked from the module 'DESIGN MODULE'.
  • Input the system branch name and the return water concept (direct or reverse).
  • Sequence the terminal units in the order of the unit positions in the direction of the branch water flow.


Once all the parameters have been entered, calculated loads related to each section of the branch will be instantly presented.

Pressure Losses Calculations

This section of 'Water Flow' Module calculates the pressure losses of all the pipe sections in the system based on a selected water temperature and temperature difference in the supply and return mains, the thermal loads calculated by the previous tab, selected pipe material and schedule (see the white cells in the sample). To improve the calculation accuracy, the module also requires your input to list the fittings (tees, elbows, valves etc) pertaining to each section.

The Module returns the dynamic, friction, fitting and total pressure losses in the sections calculated using the Bernoulli equation and the methodology and pipe material hydraulic properties as recommended by the ASHRAE Handbook 'Fundamentals', 2005.

In addition, the Module calculates the water volume of each section of the system required for sizing the expansion tank of the system and summarizes the total branch pressure losses.

'Water Flow' Module accuracy has been validated by comparison with the duct sizing chart in the ASHRAE Handbook 'Fundamentals', 2005.
